| The
facility is designed to provide therapeutic
intervention to 200 preschool students who
have sensory integration (SI) dysfunction
or sensory processing disorders. In September
2006, the agency will initiate an outreach
program to assess children in the neighboring
communities who are in need of therapy services
in this type of setting.
Therapeutic
intervention is based on theories and principles
of sensory integration - the ability to
synthesize, organize and process incoming
sensory information received from the body
and from the environment to produce purposeful
goal directed responses. Our sensory system
includes the senses of sight, sound, hearing,
smell, touch, taste, movement and body position
in space.
Occupational
therapists will provide individualized therapeutic
intervention to children who demonstrate
problems with sensory processing skills.
Our newly renovated facility includes equipment
and apparatus designed to provide safe,
supervised and therapist directed exploration
and experiences of movement and motor skills
that are designed to promote children's
development and improvement with sensory
integration dysfunction.
Improved
sensory integration enables children to
participate more fully and appropriately
in activities at home, at school and in
the community. ACDSs Sensory Motor Gym will
be open during school hours, after school
hours and
on Saturdays.
